Food, Environment, and Zoonotic Disease

A free virtual event!

November 10 from 7-8pm

Whether you have been devastated, distraught, or just inconvenienced by the COVID-19 pandemic, life is undeniably different than before. How did this happen? Why are there masks hanging from our rear-view mirrors? Overlapping with our food system's role in climate change is its role in zoonotic disease transmission. From HIV to Mad Cow Disease, bird flu to swine flu, and Ebola to COVID-19, industrial farming and wildlife encroachment are spawning new pathogens every day. With reverence for science, Zach will discuss how plant-based eating patterns bolster personal immunity, mitigate climate change, and slash our collective risk for future pandemics.

A plant-based nutrition advocate, Zach Burns practices medicine to improve the lives of human and non-human beings. He is amazed by the power of whole, plant foods to prevent and predictably reverse the major chronic illnesses plaguing our society. Zach is a family medicine resident in Rhode Island, and closely assists the plant-based pioneer Dr. Michael Klaper on his Moving Medicine Forward initiative. Zach aspires to practice lifestyle medicine with low-income people while engaged in various facets of the movement to eradicate factory farming.
